New Patients

Welcome to Atlantic Veterinary Hospital! We are committed to your pet’s health and look forward to meeting you.

We are a full-service pet hospital designed to provide your pets with the best quality health care in an atmosphere that is as comfortable and relaxing as possible. Our appointments are scheduled for at least 30 minutes, which allows us the time and opportunity to delve into the individual needs of you and your pet. We look forward to a long and friendly relationship with you, one centered on service and trust. We hope to earn the distinction of being your pet’s trusted family doctor… for life.

What can I do to prepare for the appointment? What should I bring?

  • Request an appointment by phone or online. You may schedule with the doctor of your choice, or we can recommend one based on your needs and your schedule.
  • Make a list of any questions you have and a brief chronological history of the medical concern we will be addressing. If you would like to discuss more than one pet, please schedule an additional appointment time.
  • Gather copies of your pet’s prior medical history, or supply us ahead of time with a list and phone numbers of any other veterinarians your pet has seen and we will get the information for you. Our doctors would like to review your pet’s previous medical history before the appointment so they can spend the entire time talking to you and examining your pet.
  • Collect a fresh stool sample (about a tablespoon will do) in case you and your pet’s doctor decide an intestinal parasite screen is necessary. If your pet is having a urinary issue, please do not allow them to urinate just prior to the appointment so we can collect a sterile urine sample.
  • Bring pet insurance forms – if you don’t have pet insurance, we can tell you more about it.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled appointment so that we may complete the registration process, allowing the doctor to spend the entire appointment with you and your pet.

During the appointment

  • For the safety of all our patients, all pets must be on a leash or in a carrier. If you need suggestions about how to ease your cat’s travel worries, please download this article, “Getting Your Cat to the Veterinarian.”
  • Take a deep breath. We’ve scheduled at least a 30-minute appointment to get to know you and your pet better and to understand the issue that brought you to us. We look forward to getting to know you better and building a trusting, friendly relationship.
  • The doctor will review any prior veterinary history, then address your current concerns and questions you may have. She will perform a complete physical examination of your pet, reviewing all body systems, and share those findings with you. Next, the doctor will develop and review a treatment plan with you. If you would like an estimate of the cost of treating your pet, we are happy to provide one for you. With your approval, we will then provide the care outlined in the treatment plan.

After the appointment

  • We will contact you to discuss laboratory results, usually within 24 -48 hours (sometimes sooner). Results will also be provided to you via your pet’s Petly account, your pet’s complimentary private health webpage that you can access 24/7. Your pet’s doctor will also share the exam report and any discharge instructions on your pet’s Petly page. Check it out!
  • We often call to check on a pet in the days following an appointment, but you’re also welcome to call or email us with any questions you have or an update on your pet’s progress.
